Fitness- Beyond Vanity

There is a sense of disdain with which I have always looked at people who took immense care of how they look, physically. That is, till the time I could see my midriff grow to the point, which seems like a point of seemingly no return to me and feel several hammers hitting hard against my chest every time I would climb up to my second story house.

I tried to make fun of people who took care of themselves and found solace for missing out on each passing day which went off without any exercise and with as poor a food habit as could be imaginable. But, I did know in heart of my heart that it was no narcissism in taking care of yourself. As I find my daughter playing with the toys on the festival of Holi, the hammering heart of mine makes me very angry and annoyed for the pretense of being a higher order human being who too happy to focus on developing mental faculty while the body took the beating on account of poor eating habits coupled with lack of exercise. What started as believing that taking care of your physical shape is something which only models, actors and page-3 celebrities need to do; gave way to a fear staring me in the eyes as I carried my little one on the shoulder for little over a kilometers.

Another important impact that your physical heath has is on your work life on account of your percieved performance and your real one, and loosing health makes you loose on both. One may find solace (read Perils of Rationalization) in believing that your body shape notwithstanding you do have a good career, but then with a better one, you could have a great one instead of good one. I have been realizing that as I have been pushing myself into the grind of the work, everyday feeling drained out of energy right from the start of the day. I do know, in the heart of my heart, there is a clock ticking somewhere every moment, and with each passing year, I move closer to the age group of people in leadership roles in great organization, and then which organization would want a tired, sleepy leader; and more important, how would a father loosing breath every minute deal with agrowing daughter bursting with energy. It is not vanity alone, it is the quality of life you live, till you live.

Holy Cow!! Indian Media and the Reporting of Riots

A man walks into metro station, shoot himself. The story is a footnote on some inside pages of the newspaper. Even if someone reads it, it is security lapse which stands out. The dead doesn’t evoke attention, let alone sympathy. Without personalization, it is a lame news. I am not a journalist. I am not even a student of journalism in proper sense. If I go by the wise words by Anne Lamott , and analyze the reports, the intent and interest of the journalist stands open for scrutiny. A murder in Dadri, sad as it is, outcome of rumor or fact, is reported way differently from the way, the gory murder of a reporter in same state or killing of a soldier in same state is reported. Annie Lamott tells us that we need to be presented with the actors in a story with human perspective, that what they were as human beings, beyond a statistics or a name. We know the man murdered in Dadri was doing errands for the village, a soft-spoken man, who, with hard work did well to place his kids in...
