Thoughts on Independence Day

Got up with half the day gone at 12 todoy, newspaper hits out with News of uncaught killers of a relative of Bhagat Singh in Punjab. Cogress who is so keen on concluding the trial of Sohrabuddin fake encounters in gujarat is silent on it. Congress which gives and takes support from Mayavati, and stays silent on ostantatious birthdays of hers, raises nose on 2.5 L spent on Anna Hazare birthday, referring to report in which three congress ministers were indicted.

What Independence..Can I sing Rabindranath to my child..
Where Mind is without fear
and the heads is held high
where knowledge is free;
Where the world had not been
broken up in fragments
by narrow domestic walls..?

Mind is without fear..eh..Lalit Modi falls on wrong side of government..Haveli's emerge in Rajasthan..Baba Ramdev protests..Lathicharge at midnight (rhymes with Freedom at Midnight)..Anna Hazare protests..Corruption case of INR 200k..Congress spokesman smirks with gotcha shine in his eyes..you 200k against my 80,000 Crores, what say??

Where knowledge is free?
Since long, it has been planned to increase the GDP spend on education to 6% while in reality it has always lingered at around 3%. Some records indicate 4%, with 81 in the global ranking. What is blocking the way except the intent of the ruling class.
We do not deal with it in a competent fashion and then try to compensate for our failure with false gestures like reservations.

I recently met a friend of mine and we talked about the second class citizen status when based out of India, and then we thought, is it not better to officially be second class citizen where the wrongs of the country do not touch you that much given that it is not your country; than to be a second class citizen in your country.
A very pessimistic note on Independence day, but with gray weather outside, sitting alone at home, and Manish Teewari, menacingly threatening Anna Hazare, this is the best that I could come up with. Denial has never done anyone, any good, from the depth of despair rises the sun of optimism, hope that happens to India.

Why Teaching Kids Read Early Makes Sense?

Picture Courtesy- GettyImages I am an only child, though not a child anymore. My childhood went in search of friendships outside the home, and waiting for the evening to come by to immerse into those rare moments of camaraderie. Our days, the Pre-Appu childhood, was largely supervised by our parents. I do not much remember visiting my friend’s place in childhood. Much unlike my daughter and her friends who keep meeting up in their homes. My friends were kids of my father’s colleagues and we met when they met. Friendships were formed and finished in the children park.  The interspersed period of loneliness was filled up by books. It was from Comics to pocket-books to Geeta Press to even, Indian Classics like Ramayana and Mahabharata . They filled up my days of solitude with rare happiness. I was called introvert and adults left me alone. It was an arrangement which we both liked. There was no other arrangement in the view. For some reasons, parents those days did not appr...

On the Eve of Formation of New Government

The long dance-duel of democracy has finally ended. The rulers and wanting-to-be-rulers have now decided to rest after a no-holds-barred battle is over. The unapologetic political parties and apologetic, righteous neutral commentators, jumping in and out of the discourse. In fact, the case for the commentators was the most curious, under the thinly wrapped veneer of neutrality and forward-thinking lurked the opportunity to shoot and scoot.   This was a campaign which made people see through the charade of intellectual bourgeoisie, who pretended to be neutral but treaded the thin line between the public and private. Thankfully, the campaign ended and hopefully we are left with few things still left to believe in.   Narendra Modi has a task cut out for him. Swearing-in happens tomorrow evening. My view he has things to do, new paths to tread.   He has invited the SAARC countries, all of them to attend. That to me is a good be...
